Panel Discussion with Czech Policy Makers

  For the R&D&I sector, Deputy Minister Jurajda will highlight the ongoing updating of the National Priorities of (oriented) research, which will undoubtedly emphasize the energy transformation. As an economist, he plans to respond to the presentations of the discussion of economic research on the impact of the European green deal with an emphasis on the coordination mechanisms of this policy, specifically how to prevent the so-called rebound effect and the development of gray technology in the current energy crisis. Considering the importance of the European green deal for the economy and society, he will finally try to argue that not only the actual effects of the instrument, but also public communication approximating these effects to the public are essential for the sustainability of the European green deal in the sense of political economy.

  Our planet and people are facing multiple crises, new threats and challenges. The interlinked triple planetary crises – climate emergency, biodiversity loss and pollution - have unprecedented and devastating impact on well-being and health of people, in some regions it is an existential matter. It is essential to urgently limit these impacts and at the same time adapt and build resilience through system-wide transformation. Science is the foundation for any policy-setting and for identifying potential solutions to the global challenges. For example, recently released reports (ahead of climate COP-27) provide clear climate science informing a wide spectrum of stakeholders - including policy makers, business sector, academics, finance institutions, citizens. Through actions based on the delivery of the sustainable development goals we can address many of the world’s most pressing challenges: from planetary emergency, to poverty, hunger, health, inequalities.

  The Green Deal provides concrete tools on how we can tackle the climate and biodiversity crisis. On the one hand, we need to reduce CO2 emissions and, on the other, we need to restore the landscape to make it more resilient to climate change. There is now public and political support, so we should quickly put measures into practice at local level. We need to increase water retention in the landscape, restore nature, promote biodiversity, plant trees, but also locate decentralised renewable resources.

  Deputy Minister Sršeň will shortly introduce activities of The Ministry of Regional Development focused on Smart Cities Strategy Implementation.

  Implementation of the Smart Cities Strategy contributes to the sustainable development and resilience of municipalities, cities and regions. SMART solutions are the driving force in sustainable development. Municipalities, cities and regions are places where all challenges come together and where new solutions can be tried and tested in ways that make a difference in people’s lives. Some good practices in localizing the SDGs in specific Czech municipalities will be mentioned.
